FC Nomads 7 Caernarfon Borough 2
FC Nomads win through to the Quarter Finals of the NWCFA Cup with
an impressive 7-2 win against Caernarfon Borough. FC Nomads have
now scored 26 goals in 3 games in this competition.
A match that started of as a tough affair between two very strong
teams ended in a 7-2 win for FC Nomads. The early goal, so aften
a trademark of FC Nomads was this time scored by Caernarfon as
Steve Hughes beat the offside trap on 9 minutes to give Caernarfon
an early lead. The equaliser came in the 37th minute when Lee
Molynuex got on the end of a corner to beat the keeper with a
header. That was the way it stayed until half time and both managers
thought that the game was going to go to the wire.
Caernarfon took the lead again in the 62nd minute when Craig Williams
bought down the Caernarfon striker and the referee pointed to
the penalty spot. Stuart Tindale made no mistake with the spot
kick and gave Caernarfon a 2-1 lead. Just 3 minutes later substitute
and man of the match Kev Smart hit the bar with a superb free
kick and Chris Taylor was on hand to head the rebound into the
net to make it 2-2. Caernarfon then found themselves on the back
foot when just 2 minutes later Kev Smart took another shot which
the keeper could not hold allowing Lee Molyneux to get his 2nd
of the game and give FC Nomads the lead for the first time. The
game then closed up again as Caernarfon looked for an equaliser,
this didn't come, instead in the final 7 minutes FC Nomads lay
seige on the Caernarfon goal and 4 goals in the final few minutes.
In the 83rd minute Kyle Reid knowcked the ball into the area for
Lee Molyneux to control the ball with his chest, knock it over
the defenders head and smash the ball into the net for what was
the goal of the game and possibly one of the goals of the season.
Shades of Gazza in '96 sprang to mind. In the 85th minute it was
5-2 in a comedy moment when the goalkeeper rolled the ball out
to clear the ball not realising that Kev Smart was still behind
him, Smart came from behind and took the ball before slotting
it into an empty net. In 4 minutes we had two contrasting goals
from the sublime to a 'you've been framed' moment. On 88 minutes
a through ball by Mike Hopkinson (or perhaps a hopeful shunt up
field according to Dave Smith) found Lee Molyneux on the half
way line, he then ran the length of the half into the box before
cooly slotting the ball home to make it 6-2. The final goal of
the game came in the 90th minute when Dave Parsonage was being
hounded by the keeper and a defender, he managed to beat them
both, leaving them in a heap on the floor before scoring a close
range effort. The final score was FC Nomads 7 Caernarfon Borough
2, a scoreline that perhaps didn't reflect the game as a whole
but in football it those teams that can manage the entire 90 minutes
who end up successful. FC Nomads now face tough trip to Trearddur
Bay for a quarter final tie.
